Epic Games Merges FAB with Metaverse Asset Markets

Epic Games has unveiled a significant initiative for the metaverse named FAB, which aims to consolidate various asset marketplaces under a single umbrella.

This innovative platform, known as Epic Games FAB, will amalgamate assets from the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Quixel Bridge, Artstation Marketplace, and Sketchfab, offering them in a unified location. In line with its practices on the Epic Games Store, Epic will allocate 88 percent of the revenue to the creators.

Epic Games elaborated in a blog post, “Traditionally, game developers would craft every element of their product from scratch. However, content marketplaces like the Unreal Engine Marketplace and Unity’s Asset Store now provide extensive libraries of content. Game developers can license these assets from independent creators, streamlining their development process.

We anticipate a significant growth in this trend, especially as creators from communities around Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft, and other 3D worlds begin to view these marketplaces as vital sources of metaverse content. Moreover, as players increasingly engage in creating and personalizing their online 3D spaces, the demand for such content is expected to rise.”

FAB will host an extensive collection of digital assets, including “3D models, materials, sounds, VFX, digital humans, and more,” according to Epic.

The company envisions FAB as a versatile marketplace, accessible to all engines, games inspired by the metaverse that allow for imported content, and widely used digital content creation tools. This implies that the store’s offerings will be valuable even to those who do not use the Unreal Engine for development.

FAB is anticipated to officially launch later this year, but it is currently accessible in alpha as a new add-on for the Unreal Editor within Fortnite tools.
